Final Decision for Cricket Stadium in Islamabad

Cricket Stadium in Islamabad

It seems that all of the relevant departments come to an agreement and decision to establish the first cricket stadium in Islamabad. The project for the construction of the cricket stadium in Islamabad was kept pending for about a decade ago.

When the discussions are conducted, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) decided to sign the Memorandum of Understanding with Pakistan Cricket Board and allowed them to construct the cricket stadium in the capital city. The MoU states that 35 acres of land has been allotted at Shakarparian for building up of the cricket stadium. After the completion of the project and construction of cricket stadium, CDA will be entitled to 30% and cricket board will get 70% of the earnings through the domestic and international matches being conducted at this stadium.

There is no cricket stadium or academy in the capital city located in the government sector and all local matches and the trainings are carried out at Diamond Club ground or any other club owned stadiums. CDA revoked the lease of PCB for the construction of the cricket stadium and it refused to issue NOC. CDA allotted 40 acres of land in 2008 to PCB for 33 years and PCB made no attempt for the construction of the stadium for next 5 years and it forced CDA to cancel the allotted land. According to the initial plan, it is suggested that the stadium will have the seating capacity of 50,000 and it will also be added with cricket academy, five star hotel and other related facilities.

Valid Concern against Stadium

The Islamabad cricket stadium faced the negative criticism over the location of the stadium as Shakarparian is the central forest area of capital and it is declared the ‘heart of the city’. As the deforestation has left its impact in shape of increasing temperatures and drop the water levels and the setting up of the stadium in the forest area has been rejected by the people.

The former ICC President, Ehsan Mani rejected the idea of the stadium being constructed in Islamabad and he said that Islamabad does not have enough population and it does not need a big stadium, which will become the white elephant. These large stadium are economically nonviable and it is difficult to maintain it.

He further added that the construction of stadium in Shakarparian will cause the irrevocable damage to the capital and it will also damage the environment. If the officials of PCB want to make the big stadium, then they should upgrade Pindi Stadium, which is located 6 km away from Shakarparian.

Pakistani Environmental Agency (Pak-EPA) and National Council for Conservation of Wildlife (NCCW) has opposed the project since it is started and these organizations proposed the site for the construction of stadium in the jurisdiction of Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP) and this project is the violation of the Islamabad Wildlife (Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Management) ordinance 1979 and it is also the violation of the master plan of the city.

When the stadium is constructed at this site, the thousands of trees will be fallen and the shrubs, flora and other greenery spread in the area of 15 acres will be affected. It is also said that there is sports center in Shakarparian and it is used rarely so the idea of construction of the big stadium can become the big mistake, when you consider the future of the city and the project funding of Rs.2 billion at stake.
