This channel was launched by the Government of India in 1959 to telecast their news and other programs relating to current affairs and for enjoyment for the viewership of India. The channel has its various studios spreading in all major cities of India. Its has transmitters which convey its coverage and programs to people living in far flung areas of the country. Due to its vast resources, this channel made special arrangements for telecasting live coverage of opening and closing ceremonies of London Olympics.

Doordarshan is normally broadcast its program in India but it can also be watched through satellite in about 150 countries of the world. Its programs and other transmission are available  in UK and other neighboring countries through Sky Digital but the timing of DD India international is varies from India. Its transmissions are also available in United States through Direct TV which started its function in July 2008.
