In the 2nd test of 3 match series, India defeated New Zealand by 178 which helped the team to gain 1st position in ICC test rankings.
ICC will update the rankings after the end of series. Te3h third test between the two teams will be played from 8th to 12th October 2016 and India will remain at 1st spot irrespective of the result of the test match.
Before start of this series, India was 1 point below Pakistan and it required to win the series against New Zealand to achieve 1st spot in ICC test rankings which is the 4th time since 2003.
On Monday, India defeated the black caps when they were bowled out for 178 runs while chasing the target of 376. In the 1st test, India defeated the guests by 197 runs.
Previously, India remained on top of test ranking from November 2009 to August 2011, then in January-February 2016 and August 2016. After this achievement, India will be given the ICC Test Championship mace.
If they win or draw the last match then it will not be possible for Pakistan to regain the 1st position quickly. India will get 115 points in case it wins 3-0 and 113 points after winning the series 2-0. Pakistan can only get 112 points if it whitewashes West Indies in the upcoming 3 match series. But if New Zealand defeats India then its points will reduce to 111 after which Pakistan will get the chance to achieve the number 1 status once again.
On 12th October 2016, Pakistan and West Indies will play a first ever day/night test match between them.
